“Chips - it’s what children eat”

The other day someone said to me that chips are just what children eat so of course they eat them multiple times a week.

At Serene we believe the opposite. Giving children the biggest variety of meals possible will help them thrive, give them a love for food and prepare them for adult life. Giving children diverse foods from a young age helps their little bodies to receive all the nutrients and vitamins that they need to grow, develop, and strengthen their immune system so they can fight off any illnesses going around. Not only does it help them when they are young, it also introduces good habits that they will hopefully take forward with them into adult life.

We encourage parents to try and get as many different kinds of fruit and veg into their children as possible. Not only do we encourage fruit and veg, we also encourage flavour. Give them sweet, savoury, sour and spicy. When children are a little older we can use meal times as an educational time, teaching them about different cultures and where their food came from. Encourage your children to try Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Mexican, Italian, Thai, Greek, let them try it all and don't be scared to give it to them when they're young.

So do we agree that chips are just what children eat? Absolutely not! Are they allowed them from time to time? Totally! But why not mix it up a little? Instead of normal chips, try sweet potato chips, parsnip chips or even celeriac or beetroot. We encourage you to be bold, push yourself and your children out of their comfort zone a little. You never know, they (and you) may just love them!
